Francis Amuzu and Marlene Tonyigah returned respective net scores of 57 points and 59 points to win the Consolidated Bank of Ghana (CBG) Golf Challenge Medal last Saturday at the Bok-Nam Kim Golf Club in Accra.
Playing off a handicap of 11 in the Men’s Category A reserved for golfers with handicaps up to 14.4, Amuzu recorded four consecutive birdies on holes, including 6,7,8 and 9, playing a gross of 34 on the front-end, as well as a similar gross of 34 the on the back-end of a wet course to end with a nine-under 57.
Other winners
The Achimota Golf Club and Tafo Golf Club member was followed by Edward Abrokwah with a net score of 63 points and John Quarshie with a net score of 64 points in second and third places respectively.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic after the presentation of trophies to all the winners, Amuzu credited his victory to his chipping skills and the wet nature of the course.
The 33-year-old said with more corporate sponsorships, golf could become the next major mass sport in the country.
In the ladies event which had a total of 18 returned scores, sensational Marlene Tonyigah, who started off a handicap of 27, played a seven-under 59 to win the event.
She was trailed by Daisy Annor Apo in second place with a net score of 63 points and Jenny Le Hong in third place with a net score of 68 points.
Men’s Group B
In the Men’s Group B contest reserved for players with handicaps 14.5 to 24.0, 13-year-old Michael Nyarko stunned a field of much older and experienced amateur golfers to win the trophy.
The youngster playing off handicap 19, returned a net score of 61 points to emerge tops. He was followed by George Amissah and Michael Abbey with respective net scores of 62 points and 65 points on the leaderboard.
In a brief address, the Deputy Managing Director, Operations of CBG, Mr Thairu Ndungu, said the bank would set up golf academies in January to introduce its staff to the sport by establishing golf academies at the Bok-Nam Kim, Achimota and Kumasi courses.
