The Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) has cut the sod for the construction of the fourth phase of an international standard athletics oval with a synthetic track surface for the school.
In 2020, MOBA initiated the construction of the “Kwabotwe Centre for Sports Excellence” to serve as a sports resource facility for the schools in Cape Coast and its environs.
The centre will be a world-class integrated sports complex with modern facilities for football, basketball, athletics, swimming and volleyball, among others.
The fourth phase of the project will be sponsored by the 2023 sponsoring year groups — 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2003 — as the project for this year’s speech and prize-giving day.
The project work consists of civil works, installation of synthetic track surfaces, and the construction of VIP and spectator stands and retaining walls.
The year groups have raised GH¢2.2 million for the entire project.
The Chairman of the 2023 sponsoring year groups, Owusu Sekyere Antwi, said the Kwabotwe Centre for Sports Excellence started four years ago and it was being implemented in four phases, involving the construction of a basketball court, artificial turf, football field, relocation of existing water facilities at the school field and an athletics oval with a synthetic track surface.
He said the VIP stand and its terrace would have a seating capacity of 450 while the spectator terrace would sit 2,000 people.

He added that the facility was expected to be completed in six months and they were looking forward to completing the project fully in September and it would be inaugurated in November 2023.
He explained that the phases were the construction of a basketball court, artificial turf and football field, the relocation of existing water facilities at the school field and an athletics oval with a synthetic track surface.
The Headmaster of the school, Rev. Ebenezer Aidoo, commended the MOBA year groups for their support towards developmental projects of the school and urged all old boys to support the development of the school.
The Head of the Physical Education Unit of the school, Felix Nana Nyarko, said the projects would help the school to improve upon their sporting activities and help nurture the talents of the students.
The Secretary to MOBA Secretariat, James Morgan, for his part, thanked the sponsoring year groups for the immense teamwork for the project and appealed for support from MOBA for the completion of the project.
