Fight for progress of movie industry -AMA boss

The Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Elizabeth Sackey has entreated filmmakers to keep up the fight for the sustenance and progress of the film industry.

She said that she perfectly understood the current challenges of the sector but was optimistic that things will positively turn around when they worked at making the sector useful in the scheme of affairs of the entertainment industry.

Madam Sackey made the comments during a presentation at the opening of the Spanish Film festival held at the Omanye Hall at Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) last Saturday, November 19.

“I am so pleased that all of you have contributed to maintaining the film industry, and I believe that much more can be done.

“To assist us create a generation of great actors who can sustain themselves in the industry, I would implore you to continue to help in perfecting their craft and managing the affairs of the young stars coming up.

 “It is impossible to undervalue your contribution in keeping this industry alive up to this point, and the nation really appreciates your efforts,” she stated.

She noted that she had really high hopes for the industry, pointing out that key players are taking action to improve the sector.

“Given the efforts the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and other relevant stakeholders are putting in place, I am happy and hopeful that our industry would be stronger and better,” she said.

The Spanish Film Festival is being organised by the Embassy of Spain in Ghana in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

It is aimed at the revival of the creative arts industry particularly the movie sector and forging a mutually rewarding relationship between Ghana and Spain.

A star-studded personalities and government representatives attended the occasion.

Pascaline Edwards, Majid Michel, and Oscar Provencal were a few of the notables in attendance.

The festival began on November 19 in Accra with a film showing and will travel to Kumasi and Tamale before coming to an end on Thursday, December 8.

Among the selection of movies to be screened are “Las Niñas” ( The Schoolgirls,) Felices 140 (Happy 140) , Un novio para Yasmina” (A boyfriend for Yasmina) and “Las maestras de la República” (The Republic’s teachers),
