The future of Annor Walker as the head coach of the Black Galaxies hangs in the balance as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to evaluate his performance at the Algeria 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship.
The chairman of the Black Galaxies Management Committee, Dr Toni Aubynn, told Graphic Sports in an interview yesterday that even though the coach could not take the team to the final as envisaged, it would be premature to discuss his future now.
Coach Walker and his technical team have come under a barrage of criticism since Ghana was booted out of the tournament by Niger last Saturday, with some doubting their competence.
But Dr Aubynn thought otherwise and said that taking any immediate decision would be inappropriate and inimical to the development of the game unless a critical analysis had been done.
”Too early to contemplate” was Dr Aubynn’s answer to a question about the future of the technical team as far as their performance was concerned, adding that his committee was yet to evaluate the performance of the technical team.
While expressing his disappointment with the team’s poor performance in the game against Niger, he was of the opinion that it should not warrant the immediate removal of the technical team until an assessment had been done to evaluate their performance.
”We haven’t sat down to critically evaluate the performance of the technical team,” he confessed.
”We drew with the Algeria national team which has now booked a place in the semi-finals. So our team is certainly a good one. That’s why it feels very disappointing that we couldn’t rise to the occasion when it mattered most,” he noted.
\He described the Galaxies team as the best, having assembled some of the finest players from the local scene as observed in their performances during their warm-up matches.
”Remember the performance was excellent in all our test matches. We were beaten 1-2 by the Qatar national team that participated in the FIFA World Cup with the same players.
”We won all our test matches at home, we qualified against almighty Nigeria and Benin. Again, we beat Ahly Club of Egypt and the Under-20 national side of Egypt,” he recalled.
